Every Camper’s Winter Dream: 11 Essential Tips for Motorhome Adventures in the Snow
Experienced motorhome travellers will all agree: a trip to snowy landscapes with your camper is an unforgettable experience. Imagine soaking in the beauty of white winter wonderlands while enjoying cosy evenings in your own bubble. To make the most of this adventure, keep these 11 practical tips in mind to ensure you’re fully prepared for the challenges that winter might bring.
1. Keep Your Heating On Continuously
It’s crucial to keep your heating on at a low setting, even when you’re out exploring the area. This prevents your pipes and water tanks from freezing and stops the frost control system from activating (which could leave you without hot water). Plus, your motorhome will warm up faster upon your return.
Pro Tip: If your trip includes high altitudes (1200m or above), double-check that your heating system is suited for these conditions.
2. Monitor Your Battery Levels Closely
Winter conditions demand more electricity, so start your journey with fully charged starter and leisure batteries. Regularly check their levels and recharge as needed. For added convenience, opt for campsites or camper stops with a 220V power supply.
3. Winter Tyres Are a Must
All-season M+S tyres are not the same as winter tyres! Only tyres marked with the mountain and snowflake symbol qualify as true winter tyres. Not only will they perform better in snowy conditions, but they’re also legally required in many European countries.
Pro Tip: Pack snow chains for extreme weather. Some countries mandate their use. Practise fitting them at home before your trip to avoid stress on the road.
4. Stock Up on Propane Gas
You’ll consume more gas in winter, so check your gas bottles before departure. Partially empty lightweight bottles can develop ice buildup. Propane is a better choice than butane, as the latter becomes liquid at freezing temperatures.
5. Bring Spare Fuses
With increased electrical usage in winter, there’s a higher chance of a fuse blowing, especially if you’re using energy-intensive devices like electric heaters. Carry spare fuses to avoid unnecessary disruptions.
6. Prevent Frozen Windscreen Wipers
Keep your wipers upright to prevent them from freezing to the windscreen, which could damage them. Alternatively, place a cork between the wipers and the glass, but ensure it doesn’t deform the rubber.
7. Clear Snow Off Your Roof
Avoid opening roof hatches or using satellite dishes until your roof is free of snow. Heavy snow can damage your motorhome and takes a long time to melt. Additionally, solar panels won’t function if they’re covered in snow, which limits your battery’s charging capacity.
8. Use Insulation Screens
An insulating screen on your windscreen helps retain heat and keep out the cold. For vans, cold air often seeps in through the rear doors, but tailored insulation screens are available for this as well. These measures can significantly reduce your energy and gas consumption.
9. Keep the Waste Water Drain Open
The waste water drain is located outside your motorhome and can freeze in low temperatures, potentially causing damage. To avoid this, leave the drain open and place a bucket underneath to collect wastewater. This way, the water freezes in the bucket rather than in your system, preventing costly repairs.
10. Use a Heating Exhaust Drip System
Condensation from your heating system’s exhaust can freeze on your motorhome, leaving unsightly stains that are difficult to clean. Installing a condensate water drain for Alde or Truma gas heaters is a simple solution to keep your motorhome pristine.
11. Keep Your Diesel Tank Full
If you plan to stay at a campsite for several days, arrive with a full tank of diesel. This prevents condensation issues in the tank and ensures your diesel heating system, if you have one, operates smoothly. Always fill up with winter diesel in freezing temperatures to avoid surprises.
