When Helmut Knaus founded his caravan company in 1960, his goal was simple: to do things his own way, guided by his instincts and far from the paths taken by other caravan builders. His first caravan, shaped like an egg, was called the “Swallow’s Nest” and won three gold medals at the International Automobile Tournament in Bad Nauheim! Soon, the original factory became too small, and he left his hometown region of Heilbronn to establish the foundation of today’s Knaus in the Bavarian Forest. From just 100 Swallow’s Nests in 1961, a generation later they were producing 20,000 motorhomes and caravans across three production sites: Jandelsbrunn (D), Möttgers (D), and Nagyoroszi (H).
