On The Road

The heart of Denmark

We are leaving on our holiday with three campers, six adults, six children and a lot of enthusiasm. We enter Denmark without a strict planning. It is immediately clear that this is a great country to travel through: the roads are quiet and in good condition. Driving together with three motorhomes is not always easy, but that makes the trip all the more adventurous!

First stop on the road trip: Roager. We look for the first campsite via Camperstops App and choose M&A Feddersen, where we stay for two nights. It is wonderful to spend time on the farm with their super sweet dog, Max, the kittens, cows and calves. We enjoy each other's company at the campfire until the late hours. The next day the Ribe Viking Center is on the agenda. The adults cycle there, the children are brought by motorhome. We can do archery, mint coins, make wooden spears, really back to the Viking age! Super fun and educational for the children! Then we pay a short visit to the town of Ribe with its picturesque houses.

The journey continues towards Billund. We find our next stop at Billund Autocamperplatz: a super quiet place with well-maintained sanitary facilities and a small playground for the children. The weather is bad that day and we decide to visit the Lego House, where the children can do crafts with Lego. The perfect appetizer for what's planned for the next day...

LEGOLAND! Finally! Big party for the kids! The park itself is great! A bit of Mini-Europe in Lego combined with a wide choice of attractions. After a day of fun for young and old, we drive on to Kolding.

After spending a few days at camper pitches, this time we opt for a larger campsite on the beach of Kolding. The sun is failing on us, but the campsite more than makes up for it. The friendly owner allowed us to park the three campers next to each other. The beach is a two-minute walk away, there is a heated swimming pool, the sanitary facilities are very well maintained, there is a kitchenette with an oven (mmm, freshly baked rolls) and washing and drying machine (we are ready for that now).

The next stop is Camping Odense, where we will stay for two days. From the campsite we cycle through the woods to the town, great fun, it is a safe route even for the little ones. In Odense we do Hans Christian Andersen's walk where you literally and figuratively follow in his footsteps and follow a beautiful route past fairytale houses.

Of course, a visit to Copenhagen cannot be missed on our schedule. We leave early in the morning, because we still have 170km to go and we would like to get into the city. To reach Copenhagen, we first have to brave the Storebaelt Bridge, exciting! This gigantic bridge connects the Danish islands of Funen and Sjaelland. We do startle a little bit when it turns out that this costs €85/camper, but the crossing is very spectacular.

In Copenhagen we settle at the City Camp camper place, which is ideally located: on the water and within walking distance of the center. We immediately jump on our bikes to explore the city. It takes some getting used to the hustle and bustle, but the city turns out to be very impressive with all those beautiful buildings. The second day we cycle to the Little Mermaid in 20 minutes. Yes, it is a very small statue, but it really has its charm and belongs to Copenhagen and Denmark. I would recommend it to everyone!

That evening we drive on to Borre, Camping Mons Klint. The owners give us complete freedom to choose a spot and mini golf, swimming pool and tennis are included in the stay. We wake up to a radiant sun and, true adventurers that we are, we want to cycle from the campsite to the spectacular chalk cliffs nearby. However, the climb through the forest is too difficult to tackle by bike and we have to do most of the route on foot with the bike in hand. When returning we choose the normal path downhill, which is a success. We spend the rest of the day recovering from the adventure at the pool.

Then it is time to start the return journey. We drive to Camping Western Camp in Rodby to take the ferry in Puttgarden the next day. The arrival of the ferry again creates an exciting moment, but everything goes smoothly. From there we drive on to Bramsche, where we choose our last overnight stay via the Camperstops app: Stellplatz Hasebad & Varus-Therme, a parking lot of the local swimming pool. To our great luck, the swimming pool remains open until 10 pm and we can still enjoy the large indoor pool, the sauna, the outdoor pool and the slides. The perfect end to a wonderful trip.

We really enjoyed each other's company and the outdoors. Especially cooking outside together for a group of 12 people was always a very nice moment. It reminds you of the Chiro camps of the past. Children will especially remember the crossings in Denmark: there is a countdown from 10 to 0 on the zebra crossings, but even if you sprint to the other side, you are never fast enough.

Denmark, thank you and see you next time!
